Otoplasty, or ear surgery, is a cosmetic procedure that corrects prominent or protruding ears, improving their shape, position, and proportion in a natural and discreet way. In both adults and adolescents, this simple surgery can eliminate complexes, improve self-esteem, and harmonize the face.

Otoplasty

Otoplasty, or ear surgery, is a cosmetic surgery procedure that corrects prominent or protruding ears, one of the most common aesthetic problems in both adults and adolescents. This relatively simple and effective procedure allows the shape, position, and proportion of the ears to be modified, achieving a more harmonious and natural result with the rest of the face.

It is one of the few cosmetic surgeries that can be performed on minors, starting at age 8, when auricle development has fully matured and the procedure does not affect growth.
Dr. Marco Vricella explains each step in detail during your consultation, providing you with clear and professional information.
Results and recovery after otoplasty
After the procedure, a compression bandage is placed and kept on for 24 hours. Following this, it is recommended to wear an elastic headband both day and night for the next two weeks to protect the new ear position and prevent accidental forward bending. Postoperative discomfort is usually mild to moderate and easily managed with pain relievers. The results of otoplasty are permanent and do not change over time.
When can I return to my normal activities after ear surgery?
Recovery is quick. Within a few days, most patients can resume their normal activities, and from the second week, they can gradually return to moderate physical exercise, always following medical instructions.
What type of anesthesia is used for otoplasty?
In general, ear surgery is performed under local anesthesia with sedation, ensuring a comfortable and safe experience. However, general anesthesia is also an option for patients who prefer to be completely asleep during the procedure.

How is ear surgery performed?

In most cases, ear surgery is performed through a small incision located at the back of the ear. This allows the cartilage to be reshaped and folded at the appropriate points, reducing the depth of the auricular concha, while always aiming for a natural and symmetrical appearance.
Because the incision is placed behind the ear, the resulting scars are virtually invisible. The procedure is typically carried out under local anesthesia with sedation, although general anesthesia can also be used if the patient prefers to be fully asleep during the operation.
The otoplasty procedure generally takes between 1.5 and 3 hours, depending on the complexity of the case.
