Complications with breast augmentation are rare. The most common are general complications associated with any surgery. One specific to this procedure is capsular contracture, which occurs when the body produces excess scar tissue around the implant. This occurs in fewer than 2% of cases, and fewer than 1% require surgical revision.
State-of-the-art breast implants are very safe and resilient. Rupture is very rare but not impossible after 10 years. As for whether implants can burst on an aeroplane due to pressure changes — this is completely false.
A woman with breast implants can breastfeed without difficulty, especially when implants are placed via the inframammary fold or armpit. In most cases, even if placed through the areola, breastfeeding ability is not affected.
As with any surgical procedure, breast augmentation is contraindicated for patients with certain medical conditions. Pre-operative tests are essential. If the patient wishes to undergo the procedure after childbirth, it is advisable to wait at least six months after finishing breastfeeding.
Scars will be very small and can be placed in the inframammary fold, along the lower edge of the areola, or in the axillary fold. Over time they typically become almost invisible — even with a small bikini they remain completely hidden.
